Every year, the top athletes in the world travel to the Kona Coast on the Big Island for the most grueling athletic competition in the world. Three different events, over 150 miles, and many hours form the Ironman Triathlon, an event that participants spend years training for, and something you should check out on your trip to the Big Island.
Racers start with a 2.4-mile swim in the warm waters, ride 112 miles on a bike, followed up with a 26.2 mile run. The all day event has been held in Kona since 1978, and is considered the pinnacle for endurance racing. It is easily one of the most highly anticipated events in Hawaii each year, and brings some well-deserved attention to the Kona Coast. The television coverage of the race draws viewers from around the world, and showcases the stunning, natural beauty of Kona.
Of course, you will be able to see the Kona Coast during your trip, taking part in one of the amazing tours that we offer. From swimming with Manta Ray, to sunset dinner cruises, there are some really incredible ways to experience the island. Ocean activities are among the most popular things to do in Hawaii, and you can always tell your friends back home that you swam in the same waters as the Ironman Triathletes!
Kicking off on Ali’I Drive, and covering much of the coast, you may see racers if you are on the island on Saturday June 3rd. The 2017 race is expected to be one of the best yet, and the chance to watch these amazing athletes will be an added treat for your trip.
Head out early to see the start of the race, or enjoy a late morning and head out when the transition between swim and biking, or biking and racing happens. The athletes are going full throttle and working hard to clock their best time in hopes of becoming an Ironman. They can use all the support they can get and watching these top athletes in action is a spectacle you must check out.
Good luck to this years Ironman hopefuls!
