Big Island vegetarian cuisine may not be as famous as seafood or bar food, but Hawaii’s largest island does offer delectable island cuisine for vegetarians and vegans.
While there isn’t a huge selection of vegan and vegetarian options, those that are here focus on local plant-based food that is healthy and delicious.
Here are 5 vegetarian and vegan restaurants to try out on your next Hawaii vacation:
1 – Basik Café
Basik Café is a café that specializes in acai bowls and smoothies. Their menu is dairy-free and entirely plant-based.
The acai bowls contain a blended acai base, which is then topped with granola, nuts, berries, natural sweeteners, and other healthy ingredients. Basik’s smoothies are equally healthy, including many of the same ingredients.
Basik Café is located in Kailua-Kona.
2 – Prabha’s Indian Restaurant
This Indian restaurant and vacation rental is another great vegetarian and vegan option, claiming to be the only 100%-vegetarian/vegan Indian restaurant on the island.
Their buffet includes a range of Indian dishes, which are all gluten-free, GMO-free, pesticide-free, MSG-free, and L-Cysteine-free. They only use the freshest ingredients, and offer discounts to those who stay at their vacation rental.
Prabha’s is located in Hilo.
Ai Pono
This vegan restaurant was established in August, 2015, to meet the needs of health-conscious vegans on the Big Island. Vegetarians and vegans will enjoy their selection of plant-based foods, which includes raw zoodles, phad thai, falafel tacos, organic soups, and more.
Got a sweet tooth? Not to worry … they make fantastic desserts, too.
Ai Pono is located in Kailua-Kona.
pHresh
pHresh is a restaurant that uses local, fresh ingredients to produce its vegetarian menu. The focus of pHresh is health, which they take to a whole new level by offering juice cleanses.
The menu includes a selection of wraps, salads, smoothies, juices, as well as an acai bowl for good measure.
And, while you’re here, why not turn your Hawaii vacation into a healthy vacation? Their Rainbow Juice Cleanse is designed to detoxify and rejuvenate, with an assortment of juices, ranging from apple ginger to kale to almond milk.
pHresh is located in Kailua-Kona.
Sweet Potato Kitchen
Sweet Potato Kitchen specializes in vegan dishes that are gluten-free and GMO-free. Whenever possible, ingredients are locally sourced. Most of the menu is made from scratch, including everything from the crust to the filling.
They are open for breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday. For breakfast, you can enjoy toast with mushroom gravy, an acai bowl, a curry polenta plate, and more. And for lunch, try the Beetsteak Burger Plate, which includes a loaded beetsteak patty on fresh-baked sandwich bread, served with a side of roasted roots or smashed potatoes and kimchee.
Sweet Potato Kitchen is located in Hawi, on the northwestern tip of the island.
