Scenic drives in Kauai are a great option for tourists, for a number of reasons:
- You can see some of Kauai’s unparalleled natural landscapes
- Driving is inexpensive
- Scenic drives are relaxing
- They are good ways to fill up time between other Kauai tours and activities
No matter how long you plan to stay on the island, these scenic drives in Kauai are a great way to spend your time...affordably.
Waimea Canyon Drive
One Kauai attraction you should definitely visit is Waimea Canyon.
This gorge, which has been called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is 3,000 feet deep and 10 miles wide.
It is one of the most memorable sights you’ll come across during your stay in Hawaii, so make sure you stop by at least once.
Before taking a hike or a tour of the canyon, it’s not a bad idea to take a drive along Waimea Canyon Road.
First, find Waimea on your map, then look for signs pointing you north towards the canyon.
The road has a number of lookouts and viewpoints, so make sure to bring your camera.
Kuhio Highway
Also known as Route 560, Kuhio Highway runs along the north shore of the island.
The best place to start is in Hanalei, heading west, and follow the highway until it ends at Ke’e Beach.
When you leave Hanalei, keep your eyes peeled for lookouts, beaches, and other attractions. At the end of the road, you’ll have an opportunity to hike the a 11-mile trail that will give you some great views of the Na Pali coast.
This small, winding highway is a great way to relax, take in some scenery, and discover some hidden gems in the northern part of the island.
Hanalei Valley Lookout
Hanalei has been called one of the most beautiful spots on the island, and this lookout is one of the most photographed in all of Hawaii.
It offers sweeping views of Hanalei Valley, the coast, and the mountains.
The lookout is located on Kuhio Highway just east of Hanalei and just south of Princeville, so this is a good stop to make either before or after taking a drive on Kuhio Highway.
Na Pali Coast and Kalalau Beach
If you’re a hiker, make sure you bring your hiking boots with you when you drive along the Kuhio Highway. As mentioned, the 11-mile Kalalau Trail will take you along the Na Pali Coast.
At the end of the trail, you’ll be able to visit one of the less crowded beaches, Kalalau Beach itself.
This is the best way to see this unparalleled coastline from the land.
To see more spectacular views of the coast, consider taking a scenic boat cruise.
