Lahaina was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early 19th century. This historic whaling village was once the spot for about 1,500 sailors from as many as 400 ships took their leave, including Herman Melville who immortalized the era in his classic novel, Moby Dick.
Get a feel for old Lahaina as you stroll down Front Street and visit all the historic spots like the U.S. Seamen’s Hospital, the Pioneer Inn, Hale Paaho (Lahaina Prison), and other sites along the Lahaina Historic Trail. Lahaina is on the National Register of Historic Places. There are approximately 55 acres of old Lahaina that have been set aside just for the historic districts.

If visiting during the winter months, you can set sail on a whale watching tour from Lahaina Harbor. One of the best places in the world spot humpback whales is from the channel just off the coast of Lahaina. Even the whales cant get enough of Lahaina, and neither will you.
