The legends of Hawaiian history play a vital role in the culture of the islands, and have an influence on the day to day lives of residents. Each story that is passed through the generations is held in the highest regard, and is a direct connection to ancestors of ancient Hawaii. Some legends are well told and are known by all, and some are less known, though there importance should not be understated.
Each island has its own legends that have helped to shape the way of life on the island. Everything from the islands creation to stories of valleys are prominent, and the island of Maui is no exception. Even the name of the island comes from Hawaiian legend, and is a story that any visitor to the island should know.
Maui, a demigod, was known for his strength, and is best known for actually creating the islands. Legend holds that Maui was out with his brothers fishing, and hooked the ocean floor with his magic fishing hook. His brothers, who were paddling the boat, began paddling as hard as they possibly could, under the impression that they’d hooked a large fish. Exhausted, the brothers stopped paddling, leaving only a portion of the islands exposed, and not fully unified.
Another of Maui’s great feats was to slow the sun down during its journey acfoss the sky. His mother, Hina, was unable to properly dry her kapa because the days were too short. Maui, recognizing her troubles, climbed to the top of Haleakala, lassoed the sun with ropes from his sister’s hair. The sun agreed to slow down, creating longer days, and allowing Hina to properly dry her kapa.
