From nearly everywhere along Maui’s west and south coasts, the best snorkeling spot on the island is visible. Though the vibrant underwater world is only seen while in the water, the landmark that designates the snorkeling spot is easily seen. Its shape is recognized instantly, the crescent moon that pokes just above the surface of the water, and its purpose is undeniable. Aside from the snorkeling hotspot that it has become, it is an important place for marine life to find food and shelter.
Approximately 2.5 miles offshore, Molokini Crater is one of the top destinations on the island. Reached from Ma’alaea or Lahaina Harbor, the journey to the crater is incredible, providing views of Maui’s coast and an exciting ride as the crater gets closer. The side of the crater that faces the island is quite calm, and is a refuge for snorkelers, divers, and fish; while the opposite side is very treacherous, with rough ocean waters and waves crashing against the rock.
While snorkeling Molokini, you’ll see a variety of native fish that call the surrounding reef home. These fish are just a small population of the vibrant marine life found throughout Hawaii, and if you are lucky, a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle might make an appearance. The entire coast of Maui is thriving with tropical sea creatures, and Molokini provides the perfect place for these natives to dwell.
The channel that runs between Maui and Molokini is an area that Humpback Whales are known to frequent, providing a safe place to birth their young and swim freely while showing their calves the ropes of the ocean. Even if you are heading out for a sunset cruise, or on your way to snorkel, it is common to see these gentle giants, giving an added bonus to the outing.
Molokini is one of a few must snorkel sites on the island, and whether you are a beginner or advanced diver, Maui’s snorkeling is incredible. The chance to get in the water at any of these locations shouldn’t be missed, but there is something truly remarkable about Molokini’s unique beauty that visitors love.
