It is no secret that the Hawaiian Islands have long been the backdrop for many feature films. Since the days of Elvis Presley, a long list of all-time classic movies have been set in Hawaii, or the islands diverse features have been used for tropical settings. Some of our favorite movies have brought the islands to life, and it is always exciting to see familiar landmarks on the big screen.
Jurassic Park
Kauai was used for a large portion of the movie, with the rainforests and waterfalls offering the perfect setting for the dinosaur inhabited island. Aerial shots of Kauai were used as the setting, and Oahu’s Kualoa Ranch played host to one of the most famous scenes in the movie. Remember hiding under the log to avoid the stampeding herd of dinosaurs? You can visit that exact location during a Kualoa Ranch Movie Sites Tour!
Jumanji
The new take on the 90’s classic filmed a portion of the movie at Kualoa Ranch, and the valley of the ranch was used to create the lush setting. The movie hits theaters this December, and we cannot wait to see it.
Battleship
This may not be the most impressive movie to film in Hawaii, but many local sites were used. Oahu and Maui are both featured prominently throughout the film, and the USS Missouri Battleship played an integral role in the plot. It’s very exciting to see a war hero return to action and earn a starring role in a big budget action movie.
50 First Dates
This could be one of the movies where Hawaii plays a starring role. Not only was the film filmed entirely on Oahu, Kualoa Ranch served as the setting, and Sea Life Park is where Adam Sandler’s character worked. We even get to see some of the wildlife featured throughout.
Additional Sites to see are found all around the islands. La’ie Point had a starring scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and the beach at Halona Cove is still famous to this day for the scene in From Here to Eternity. Keep an eye out for scenes from your favorites, and be sure to take lots of pictures of these famous sites.
