You may have read in the news or seen on various Social Media sites that the USS Arizona Memorial is currently closed, and there is no timeline for its opening. Unfortunately, the structure that is built over the wreckage of the battleship suffered foundational cracking, and it is unsafe for visitors to be on board the memorial, prompting the sudden shut down of boarding. This was a big shock to all, and quite disappointing, but when the safety of visitors is involved, every precaution must be taken.
Though the USS Arizona Memorial is the star of the show and the featured attraction that many visitors visit Pearl Harbor for, it doesn’t mean that the Visitors Center and the associated museums are shut down. There is much to do and see at Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial is still standing, visible from a variety of locations around the harbor. Plus, the ferry boat is still operating, taking visitors out for a cruise around the memorial and wreckage, allowing visitors to take photos and see the oil drips that rise to the surface, and pay respects to fallen heroes.
Additionally, the museums and memorials of Pearl Harbor remain open, including the Visitors Center, which is free, and the great exhibits located throughout the area. Guests are able to take in the entire history of the war, and if they are so inclined, board and tour the USS Bowfin Submarine, or head out to Ford Island, where the USS Missouri Battleship and the Pacific Aviation Center are located. Each of these museums show off a different aspect of the United States war history, and share many important and interesting facts about the history of the country and its presence on the world’s stage.
Despite the disappointment of the USS Arizona Memorial shutting down, Pearl Harbor is still a fantastic destination for any trip to Hawaii. No matter how many times you visit, it’s an incredible trip through history and the chance to see some of the most important vessels in United States history should never be missed. The sites and exhibits of Pearl Harbor are perfect for all ages and will give a brand new appreciation for history.
