USS Missouri Battleship at Pearl Harbor

By: Hawaii Tours
Date: January 6, 2020

Pearl Harbor is one of the most historic sites in Hawaii. Its use dates all the way back to the earliest days of settlement of the islands, and though its uses have changed  entirely over the centuries, its importance has never wavered. Long before attacks the that struck the harbor in 1941, locals harvested pearls from its waters, and it was said to be the home of the shark goddess, Ka’ahupahau. As the islands developed, Pearl Harbor was used for smaller ships arriving to the islands, before being used by the United States Military. Today, Pearl Harbor is the home of the United States Navy, as well as the most visited attraction in Hawaii, which includes the USS Missouri Battleship and many authentic war museums and memorials.

As you enter the Visitors Center at Pearl Harbor, a panoramic view of the USS Arizona Memorial, the entire harbor, and many active vessels of the United State Navy is revealed. Sitting just beyond the USS Arizona Memorial is the USS Missouri Battleship, or the Mighty Mo as it is affectionately known. This is one of the most celebrated vessels in war history, and visitors to Pearl Harbor have the opportunity to board and tour this incredible ship.

The USS Missouri is an Iowa-class battleship that enjoyed an incredible career that started in 1944. Following a decommission in 1955, the ship was recommissioned in  1986, and eventually struck in 1995. The Mighty Mo was the final battleship to be completed by the United States and was where the Japanese Imperial Army officially surrendered World War II. A guided tour through her tight corridors is quite impressive, but there is nothing that can compare with standing on the spot where World War II ended. This is a piece of American history and her story deserves to be heard by all who visit Pearl Harbor.

There are more highlights on a guided tour of the Mighty Mo to count, and when you spend a day at Pearl Harbor, the history of the ship comes to life. Following your guided tour, you’ll have time to explore, viewing everything from bunks to the gun turrets, and even the dining room. The inner workings of a battleship are impressive, and there is no doubt that you will love visiting this famous Hawaii attraction.
