Hawaiian Words to Know on Your Hawaiian Vacation - Hawaii Discount

Aloha – the Hawaiian word that captures the spirit of the islands, Aloha is used as a greeting. The Aloha Spirit is what locals live by using the word will do wonders for you.

Ono – you will need to know this one when dining. Ono means delicious and is used to describe anything that you’re enjoying.

Mauka – directions in Hawaii are often given in reference to the ocean and mountains. Mauka is mountain and will be used when directing towards the inner part of the island.

Makai – the opposite direction of mauka, makai is the ocean, and will be used when directing towards the water.

A hui hou – the meaning is “until we meet again” and this is a common phrase when saying goodbye to someone that you will not see for some time. It is common to say this to a friend that is leaving the islands.

E komo mai – you may see this when entering a shopping center, hotel, or even someone’s home. The translation means, “welcome” or “enter.”

Hale – house, building. You will see this often, usually combined with additional word or words to describe the setting. Example: Haleakala – house of the sun.

Hau’oli – happy; remember to be happy, or hau’oli, during your entire trip!

Honu – Hawaii Green Sea Turtle. A sacred creature that is often seen when surfing, snorkeling, and relaxing on the beach. Remember to never touch a honu. It is against the law.

Hula – Hawaiian dance. Feel free to learn while you’re here!

Imu – underground oven used to cook the pig. You’ll see this at your Hawaiian Luau.

Lanai – porch, patio, balcony. Enjoy the ocean views from your hotels lanai.

Pupu – appetizers, or snacks. You’ll love the pupus at sunset while you enjoy a Mai Tai or ice cold Kona Longboard.

Wikwiki – fast, quickly, speedy. When you need to get somewhere in a hurry, use wikiwiki to remind the driver.
