Why You Should Visit Historic Downtown Honolulu

It seems that no matter where you go in Hawaii, there is history to be discovered. Sites like the Road to Hana are National Historic Landmarks, while other sites like Historic Downtown Honolulu are filled with incredible structures that date all the way back to the days of the Kingdom of Hawaii, remaining significant today and standing to remember the history of the islands that date back hundreds of years. Discovering these stunning sites are a great way to spend your trip and when you are on Oahu, you will want to make it a point to head to downtown Honolulu and discover the incredible history that make these sites so special.

Iolani Palace
The site of the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii, Iolani Palace is one of the most important sites to the history of Hawaii. This is the place where Queen Liliuokalani was held following the overthrown, and it is the only royal palace in the United States. Tours of the palace are given daily and taking one is highly encouraged. The beauty of the structure is jaw dropping and once you hear the stories of the palace, you will want to know more about the history of the islands.

Ali’Iolani Hale
Located right across the street from Iolani Palace, the Ali’iolani Hale is the location of the Hawaii State Supreme Court; though it’s original use was as a palace. It has long been used for state judiciary functions, and is a popular stop when checking out downtown Honolulu to see the King Kamehameha the Great Statue that resides in front of the gorgeous building.

Kawaiaha’o Chruch & Mission Houses
Probably the most unique church in the United States, and possibly the world, Kawaiaha’o Church is constructed entirely of coral bricks that were quarried from Oahu’s South Shore. Many notable functions have taken place in the church, and the Mission Houses that are found on its grounds are the actual homes that missionaries lived in when the originally made their way to Hawaii in the 1800s.

Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific
Found inside the crater of the extinct volcano that overlooks downtown, the Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific is a military cemetery that also happens to offer engaging lessons of the United States war history. Murals are found at the front of the cemetery, with maps of historic battles through many wars. The view from the cemetery is downright amazing, and a visit here is well worth the trip.
