With white sands, turquoise waters, and gentle breezes, it's no wonder that Kailua Beach in Oahu is a favorite to the locals. Located on the Windward Coast, Kailua Beach welcomes those who wish to body board, kayak, parasail, and windsurf. For you convenience, there are dive shops, kayak rentals, and beachwear boutiques nearby with all your water sport and beach needs.
Kailua is conveniently located with its great proximity to several small islands making it the ideal place for kayaking and adventuring out. Closest to the shores of Kailua is the barren Flat Island. To the east are the Mokulua Islands, commonly called the “Twin Islands” or “Moks”. West of Kailua Beach is the family-friendly beach of Kalama Beach, which is a great spot for teaching kids how to body board and surf because of its mild waves. East of Kailua is its sister beach of Lanikai Beach, another beautiful stretch of sand, but it is less accessible due to it being nestled in between some residential housing and the parking is limited there.
The actual town of Kailua is very charming. Scattered along Kailua Road is a variety of shops and restaurants to satisfy all. Try the shaved ice to cool yourself down after spending the day at the beach. President Obama famously treated his family at the Island Snow there in town. Grab some food and head on down to Kailua Beach’s grassy areas and eat on one of their picnic benches conveniently located near the ocean.
Kailua has a very laid back environment. You will find couples lounging around in the sand with their dogs, families throwing parties on the picnic tables, and teenagers or kids playing in the water. Kailua is consistently being rated as one of the best beaches in America. Being less than 30 minutes from Honolulu, Kailua is a great getaway place.
